Visiting Puget Sound
Seattle, Washington's Emerald City, is the heart of Puget Sound. From Bellingham and Mount Vernon in the north to Tacoma, Olympia and Lacey in the south, the Puget Sound region comes alive in spring and summer. Take a Memorial Day Weekend challenge in Bellingham at the Ski to Sea Race. Featuring seven sports and a course nearly 100 miles long, the 2013 Ski to Sea Race is May 26th. Participants ski, snowboard, run, bike and paddle their way from the spring snow on Mount Baker to the finish at Bellingham Bay. Have no fear, this is a team event requiring eight friends or family members to participate.
Tacoma’s Broadway Center for the Performing Arts is a hub of culture for the city. The Broadway Center hosts performances of the Tacoma City Ballet, Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and Tacoma Opera in addition to concerts and special events. June visitors to Tacoma will enjoy Brew Five Three: Tacoma’s Beer & Blues Festival on the 22nd. Take in the blues and Tacoma’s craft beers on Broadway at Pierce Transit Park.
The Tacoma Freedom Fair makes an ideal destination for the 4th of July. The Tacoma Events Commission presents the Freedom Fair, including events along the Ruston Way waterfront all day on the 4th and capped off by fireworks over Puget Sound. For a spectacular view of the Freedom Fair Airshow, join the Airshow Cruise on Commencement Bay. Tacoma Narrows Airport adds to the fun with Saturday’s Freedom Fair Wings & Wheels celebration.
Marcus Pavilion at St. Martin’s University in Lacy hosts the 2013 America’s Classic Jazz Festival June 27th through 30th. A delightful event for Jazz fans, America’s Classic Jazz Festival features 12 Jazz bands at four venues, dance floors, dance lessons and Gospel Sunday. Presented by the Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Society, Lacey’s Jazz Festival is a must for jazz music fans.
