Central Washington University

History buffs will love this story. The city of Ellensburg was chosen to location of Central Washington University, after the city lost the bid to be state capital, to the city of Olympia. The university was established in 1891 as Washington State Normal School, with an emphasis on teaching students to be teachers. In 1977, after two name changes, the current university name was selected. This public university has a student enrollment of over 10,000 and has campuses in eight locations across the state.

The university is home to the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute, one of only two in the world. From 1980 until October 2007, the chimp named Washoe, lived at the institute and learned how to use American Sign Language to communicate with humans. While in the Washington Cascades area of the state, visit the campus to see Barge Hall, the university's first building, constructed in 1893.
